Alaska Asset Team Update: Mt Redoubt Alert Level at Orange (3-16-09)

ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY CURRENT STATUS REPORT
Monday, March 16, 2009 12:41 PM AKDT (Monday, March 16, 2009 20:41 UTC)

The following is an update from the Alaska Volcano Observatory Web site (www.avo.alaska.edu):

REDOUBT VOLCANO (CAVW #1103-03-)
60°29'7" N 152°44'38" W, Summit Elevation 10197 ft (3108 m)
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE
Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH

Seismic activity at Redoubt has declined following yesterday's four-hour-long increase that accompanied emission of a steam and ash plume, which rose up to 15,000 ft above sea level. A minor ash fall was produced within the crater and on the upper south flank of Redoubt. AVO scientists aboard an observation flight at the volcano witnessed onset of the activity and conducted gas measurements.

It does not appear at this time that a significant eruption is likely in the short term, but conditions may evolve rapidly.

AVO is monitoring the situation closely and the AVO operations center in Anchorage has resumed 24 hour per day staffing.
